Lesson 4 – Collective Action

What is a union, after all? It’s people, coming together to do things collectively that they can’t do on their own.

Things like improving working conditions, wages and benefits through collective bargaining.

Boosting worker power and voice through collective agreements.

And establishing fair processes for settling workplace disputes through the grievance process.

In this “Collective Action” section, you will learn about the vital role of collective bargaining and the end result: your collective agreement. If your employer is not living up to its side of the agreement, your union files grievances to seek redress. You’ll also learn what a grievance is (and isn’t).

We will explore:

  1. Collective bargaining: what’s the big deal?
  2. What’s in a CA?
  3. What is a grievance?
  4. Where can I find my CA?

This section also includes info on bargaining-related workshops and resource guides.

A union is collective action, in practice.
